Why is the us education system failing?

I think it's because people are too worried about students' self image. They are afraid it will hurt their dignity and pride if they fail at anything, so rather than fail them they pretend they are succeeding when they really are not. They are not held to high standards anymore, so too many kids are graduating who are really not educated.
